Idaho on Course to Double Hemp Production

Farmers in Idaho are set to plant almost two times as much hemp this year as they did in 2023. Data from the state’s department of agriculture shows that last year, state farmers planted more than 1,200 acres of hemp. This is more than three times the hemp planted in 2022 when the state permitted farmers to begin cultivating the industrial crop. As of May 31, 2024, the state’s department of agriculture had approved licenses to grow hemp on 2,440 acres. Florida’s governor may soon reject a legislation — Senate Bill 1698 — that would limit and regulate the sale of marijuana products in the state. DEA Asserts That THCA Doesn’t Conform to Legal Hemp Definition

In the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is defined as a marijuana product that contains under 0.3% delta-9 THC. Recently, a top official at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (“DEA”) clarified in a new letter that this limit included delta-9 THC as well as THCA, a cannabinoid which changes into delta-9 THC when heated. In the letter, Terrence Boss stated that Congress had directed that the concentration of delta-9 THC be tested using techniques such as post-decarboxylation.
