Hemp is a plant that is nutritious, delicious, and environmentally friendly. People often confuse hemp and marijuana. however, they are slowly starting to understand that unlike marijuana, hemp does not induce a high and it has a growing list of uses, some of which are highlighted below.
- Renewable Plastic
It would be impossible to count the number of times we come into contact with plastic in our daily activities. These plastics take centuries to decompose, and in the process, they end up polluting our land and oceans. Hemp has a natural compound called cellulose, which is used to make hemp plastic, and since it is free of chemicals such as BPA and petroleum, it is more comfortable and cleaner to recycle hemp plastics.
- Environmentally Friendly Paper
Most of the paper we use today is made from trees, and this use is the leading cause of deforestation. Deforestation has a significant impact on the environment, such as eradication of small rivers and loss of animal habitat, as well as industrial pollution because of pulp and paper processing. Manufacturing paper from pulp obtained from hemp fiber is sustainable because hemp grows faster than trees. Furthermore, hemp paper does not need to be bleached with toxic chemicals. Unlike paper made from trees, hemp paper lasts longer and does not turn yellow with the passage of time.
- Used to Make Beauty Products
Hemp seed oil is in high demand because it is rich in vitamins, Omega 3, and 6 fatty acids, which are ideal for use as anti-aging products. If you haven’t yet used a beauty product containing a hemp extract, chances are your beautician will soon introduce such a product to you.
- Building Materials
Ancient Rome used hemp in its construction. In the last few years, hemp has regained its status as a sustainable and environmentally friendly building material. Hempcrete is created by mixing hemp fiber with lime and water. Hempcrete is a natural and light concrete that retains heat and is mostly used as an insulation material in buildings.
- Sustainable Clothing
Hemp fabric is trending in the textile industry, especially among environmentally conscious people. The material allows the skin to breathe because it is more porous than cotton. Unlike cotton, hemp fabric lasts longer and becomes softer as it ages, making it ideal for jeans and shirts. Unlike cotton, hemp requires less water to grow and fewer pesticides or chemicals.
- Biofuel
You can extract two types of oil from hemp, and these include hemp biodiesel, which is made from the oil obtained from hemp grains. The second is hemp ethanol, which is made from the fermented hemp stalks. The fuel is renewable, safe to store and handle and does not contain any toxic substances when burned.
- Superfood
Hemp seeds are rich in vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and essential fatty acids. They are also a great source of protein, which is ideal for people who are looking for an alternative to meat. Their nutty taste makes them a great addition to a wide variety of food products, such as the hemp burger now being served by a number of restaurants in Europe and North America.
It is widely believed that hemp companies, such as Lexaria Bioscience Corp. (CSE: LXX) (OTCQX: LXRP) and Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA), may be hard at work developing even more novel ways to use hemp.
