Arkansas Hemp Conference Slated for Mid February

The Arkansas Farmers’ Industrial Hemp Conference will be held on February 14 and 15 at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel, which is located in the downtown area of North Little Rock. The two-day event was arranged to teach the farmers the benefits and drawbacks of including industrial hemp in their crop rotation. The conference will start on Friday at 2 p.m. and end on Saturday at 5 p.m.

People looking to attend the two-day event should take advantage of the early bird special ticket going for $99, which is inclusive of a happy hour reception on Friday and lunch on Saturday.

The conference will be hosting several speakers, and these include Arkansas farmers who cultivated industrial hemp the last planting season, consultants, marketers, processors, soil scientists, seedsmen, and federal and state regulators.

Some of the topics that will be covered during the conference include:

  • Legal and regulatory requirements
  • Best hemp growing practices
  • Most significant mistakes when growing industrial hemp
  • Hemp varieties appropriate for Arkansas
  • Working with hemp processing companies
  • Finding the best market
  • Testing THC and minimizing concentration
  • Equipment for large and small farms

Green Remedies organized the conference, and it operates Indigenous Seeds, Hawgs Hemp Farm and Hawg Hemp Refinery. Brad Fausett leads the industrial hemp program at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Fausett is the co-founder of Green Remedies. He will be speaking at the conference about the most common mistakes made by new hemp farmers. He will also give the farmers tips on the best methods to adopt when growing hemp.

Shawn Peebles will also be speaking at the conference. He owns Peebles Farm, which is a 1,200-acre organic sweet potato operation located in Woodruff County, and this season, he grew five acres of industrial hemp.

Peebles said that hemp is overhyped because it is not a get rich scheme, but it can be rewarding once you add it in your crop rotation. Before growing, you have to do market research on where to sell because selling hemp is not like selling any other commodity crop.

South Carolina also hosted the 2nd annual Southern U.S. Hemp Growers Conference & Expo in December 2019. The conference was held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Penn State Extension is also presenting a one-day conference on the planting, cultivation, and harvesting of industrial hemp on February 11, 2020. The event will be held at the Chadwick in McCandles and will start at 8.30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.

Experts say that hemp companies like Marijuana Company of America Inc. (OTCQB: MCOA) and Neutra Corp. (OTC: NTRR) see these farmer-training events as vital towards ensuring the success of this newly legal industry.
