Advocates Call for Consumer Safety Standards for the Hemp Industry

Advocates in Wisconsin are championing hemp consumer safety just days after customers at a pizza shop based in the state accidentally became high after ingesting pie tainted with THC. The shop in question, Famous Yeti’s Pizza, has already apologized after they discovered that pizzas at their establishment had been inadvertently tainted with THC-infused oil.

THC is the primary psychoactive component found in cannabis. When consumed, it induces a high.

Bob Hickey Jr., the Executive Director of Let’s Legalize Wisconsin, formed a coalition that asks legislators to enforce important safety practices for legal hemp products in the state. The Coalition of Cannabis Advocates highlights the need for oversight in the growing industry.

The state defines hemp as the Cannabis sativa L. plant. This includes all parts of the plant, extracts and derivatives, if they possess a delta-9 structure with a concentration of at most 0.3% on a dry weight basis.

Producers of hemp in the state are required to obtain a hemp license to sell these products. However, Hickey argues, some businesses have found ways to bypass the rules, particularly when it comes to product potency. To help with this, he recommends that the state change things like product labels.

He adds that educating individuals is another great way to deal with this, noting that consumers knowing the different products will make it easier to know which ones are safe for consumption. In addition to this, he revealed that he’s spoken to both GOP and Democratic politicians and adds that this isn’t a partisan issue as hemp products are already legal.

However, he noted, consumers need to educate themselves until guidance is enforced by the government.

This development comes as other states in the country try to control the proliferation of intoxicating hemp products in their jurisdictions. Just recently, the state of California announced emergency regulations to protect minors from the adverse effects of dangerous hemp products.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced the regulations, which prohibit the sale of any industrial hemp drink, food, or dietary product intended for consumption by humans if it has any amount of THC or other intoxicating cannabinoids.

Over in Missouri, Gov. Mike Parson signed an executive order in August that banned intoxicating hemp products. The order will also impose penalties on any establishment with a liquor license or that sells food products for selling these intoxicating products. This is in addition to banning firms from producing hemp-derived THC drinks in the state.

The patchwork of regulations being proposed or passed in different states is likely to present new challenges to various entities like Software Effective Solutions Corp. (d/b/a MedCana) (OTC: SFWJ). An ideal solution would be for the federal administration to pass regulations providing a framework that states can tweak.
