Alabama Hemp Farmers on Course as Plants Pass THC Test

So far, the samples of hemp tested by state inspectors have passed the THC test since they are all within the 0.3 limit set by federal and state law. This is the first crop of hemp that is being grown in the state from 1937 when the last hemp farm closed.

Rick Pate, the Alabama Agriculture Commissioner, says that samples were taken from 45 licensed hemp growers and all those samples have passed the test to establish whether their THC content is within the legal limit.

This news couldn’t have come sooner for many farmers who were deeply worried that their crop would be found to exceed the acceptable THC limit and they would be compelled to destroy all the plants.

Nearly all the farmers in Alabama who are growing hemp are cultivating it for the extraction of CBD (cannabidiol). CBD is linked with providing relief from many conditions, such as anxiety, inflammation, pain and insomnia.

Since hemp is still new in the state, most farmers are growing a small number of plants in order to learn what exactly is required to tease the most optimum yield out of this lucrative crop.

David Johnson, who owns Bama Green in Cherokee County, says that he is growing just 1,000 hemp plants on his farm. Half of these plants are in an outdoor grow area while the other half are in a greenhouse.

Johnson says that his family has been farming in greenhouses since 1983 and he is experimenting with hemp since he has no experience in growing it. So far, David Johnson is happy with the way his experiment is progressing since the hemp plants look to be thriving.

He credits his good progress to the techniques of growing flowers that he has applied to the cultivation of hemp.

Other farmers have already started harvesting their hemp and Rick Pate revealed that five have already either sent their harvest to processors within or outside the state so that CBD can be extracted from the dry plant material.

However, the state hemp program hasn’t been without incident. For example, trespassers pulled some plants in Madison County thinking that what they were taking was marijuana. State officials have been emphasizing that smoking hemp will not get anyone high, but it seems this hasn’t worked, probably because hemp looks just like marijuana.

For now, the hemp farmers can take comfort in the fact that they may not suffer the same fate as half of the farmers in Hawaii who had to destroy their hemp plants after they were found to have THC that exceeds the legal limit.

Experts believe that the farmers in Alabama and industry players like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) are hoping that no farmer has to suffer the experience of destroying mature hemp plants that they have tended for months.
