Hempseed Meal Gets Nod for Inclusion in Layer Feed

During its annual meeting in San Antonia last week, the Association of American Feed Control Officials announced its approval to use hempseed meal in chicken feed for commercial layers. Hempseed meal is made by milling or grinding leftover cake after oil is extracted from Cannabis sativa L. seeds via mechanical processing. This decision will allow this hemp ingredient to be used as a source of fat and protein in diets for layers in America, with the agency capping the ingredient’s rate of inclusion at 20%. The agency is now planning to include hempseed meal, albeit tentatively, in its official publication.…

USDA Beefs Up Trade Committee to Promote US Hemp Internationally

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have appointed a new individual to the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Tobacco, Cotton, Peanuts and Hemp. Prior to its name change in 2023, the committee’s name didn’t include hemp. The first individuals appointed to represent the hemp industry to this committee served on the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee for Trade in Tobacco, Cotton and Peanuts. USTR representative Katherine Tai and secretary of agriculture Tom Vilsack made the announcement of the new appointment last week, revealing that the VP of Government Affairs for Lazarus…

Hemp Farmers Say Crop Can Be Good Entry Point for New Growers

Data from the South Dakota Industrial Hemp Association estimates that there are more than 3,000 acres of hemp being grown in the state this year. While this is a substantial amount, it has been overshadowed by the planting of other crops. This year, farmers in South Dakota planted 5.1 million acres and 6.1 million acres of soybeans and corn, respectively. From this, we can see that hemp has a long way to go as a cash crop before it can compete with crops such as soybean, corn, wheat and sorghum. Despite this, the president of the South Dakota Industrial Hemp…

New Study Says CBD Lotion Reduces UV Damage to Skin

New research has determined that applying lotion infused with CBD to one’s skin may be linked to a reduced risk of damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays. The research was carried out by a team of researchers from Northwestern University, George Washington University, the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research and the University of Miami. The researchers’ objective was to find out whether the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD could alleviate skin aging and cancer risks associated with exposure to the sun, particularly exposure to ultraviolet-A radiation. This is mainly because UV rays contribute to photocarcinogenesis and photoaging by generating…

EPA Gives Nonprofit $6.2M Grant to Promote Hemprete, Agriculture-Derived Building Materials

Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the U.S. federal government awarded over $6 million in grants to the Hemp Building Institute. The nonprofit, which is based in Nashville, manufactures a material similar from hemp that is similar to concrete; the substance is known as hempcrete. The institute works with organizations that use and manufacture construction products. In total, Hemp Building Institute will be allocated $6,186,200 for the development of life-cycle assessments and environmental product declarations for biogenic materials, including materials manufactured from soy, hemp and straw bale. Despite Industry Protests, Texas GOP Wants Intoxicating Hemp Banned

The consumable hemp industry in the state of Texas is valued at an estimated $8 billion. When legislators drafted a law to legalize hemp in 2019, they didn’t consider the fact that intoxicating hemp could find its way to the market. At the time of enactment, CBD was the most common compound derived from hemp. This compound is known for not inducing a high when ingested, and it possesses medicinal properties. However, the industry’s growth allowed for the proliferation of intoxicating hemp, which induces highs when consumed. Currently, intoxicating compounds derived from hemp that are made into products such as…

Supreme Court Ruling Could Set Precedent Regarding Hemp as RICO Case Review Concludes

The Supreme Court is expected to give a ruling on a case involving hemp. This is the first time since the 2018 Farm Bill was enacted that the court will be ruling on any hemp-related case. This farming measure federally legalized the sale and production of hemp and its derivatives. This bill distinguishes marijuana from hemp by categorizing hemp as cannabis that doesn’t contain more than 0.3% THC. THC is one of the two primary compounds found in marijuana plants, with the other being CBD. Unlike THC, however, CBD doesn’t induce a high when ingested. CBD is one of hemp’s…

Product from Hempcrete Aces Passes Fire-Resistance Testing

Hemp has various applications, with its stalk being made of fibers that are flexible and soft. Hurds, the plant’s woody inner core, are hard and rigid. Americhanvre, a company offering hemp-building solutions, recently passed a fire-resistance test for its product, Ereasy. The Ereasy system is a spray-on application kit that delivers hempcrete, which is a construction material that has been used in construction for centuries. For instance, hempcrete plaster was applied more than 1,000 years ago on the walls of Ellora Caves in India. The manmade caves are a World Heritage site and were cut into rock then plastered from…

WhatsApp Messages Suggest Florida GOP, DeSantis, Hemp Industry Teaming Up to Defeat Cannabis Legalization

The Office of the Governor of Florida has denied allegations about having an exchange agreement with hemp operators in the state. This comes after the state’s hemp industry pledged a $5 million donation to the state’s GOP party after Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed a measure that would have put a stop to the state’s intoxicating products. According to a popular news outlet, WhatsApp messages from Save Florida Hemp were leaked. This group includes hemp manufacturers, major laboratories and small shops. Hemp industry lobbyists in the state of Florida include Bill Helmin, the executive director of the party, and Evan Power,…

New Hemp Reference Material from NIST to Ensure Accuracy in Cannabis Measurement

Earlier this week, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced that it was selling reference material on hemp that would assist labs in correctly measuring components in products made from the cannabis plant. The reference material was made from commercially purchased dried hemp, which the researchers ground, sieved, blended and measured to a high degree of precision and accuracy. Each unit includes three packets with 1.5 grams of ground hemp. This material will also help agencies of law enforcement accurately differentiate between marijuana and hemp, given that both come from the cannabis plant. Prior to the legalization of…
