Federal regulators have approved the use of ten pesticides on hemp crops giving hemp farmers a chance to control pests during the 2020 planting season. Hemp cultivation was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill, and in October, the USDA released guidelines which give farmers across the nation a chance to grow the crop.
On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it has approved 10 pesticides to be used on industrial hemp to control insects and pests. The ten pesticides include nine biopesticides and one conventional pesticide. Most of the pesticide products help in controlling insects, bacteria, fungi, and nematodes.
In a public statement, the United States Secretary of Agriculture said that the EPA’s pesticide approval supports hemp farmers’ efforts in growing the crop during the coming growing season.
The U.S. Hemp Roundtable acknowledged that people are excited about hemp because it is a new agricultural product and the EPA’s actions provide farmers with additional tools that will motivate them to join the industry.
It is the responsibility of the EPA to regulate pesticides to ensure that they are environmentally friendly and are safe for plants which are later consumed by people.
Federally, marijuana is still illegal; therefore, the use of pesticides on marijuana crops is unlawful.
The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) said that this is the first set of products to be approved by the EPA and provides protection to the U.S. hemp growers.
Many of the approved pesticides are biopesticides made from natural ingredients, and they include:
The registered conventional product is made from chemical compounds, and it is:
The approval of these pesticides is likely to be good news to sector players like LiveWire Ergogenics Inc. (OTC: LVVV) and Neutra Corp. Inc. (OTC: NTRR) who may have been hearing lots of complaints from farmers regarding the pest challenges they face.
