Global Hemp Construction Experts to Address US Hemp Building Summit

A panel of international hemp building experts is slated to address a summit of the hemp building industry in the U.S. The event, which is organized by the U.S. Hemp Building Association-USHBA, is due to take place on October 24 and 25 in Idaho.

USHBA is a new body that plans to advocate for building using materials derived from hemp. The summit in October is the first event organized by this hemp building association.

The construction industry in the U.S. is currently valued at more than one trillion dollars each year, and the proponents of using hemp as a construction material hope that the construction segment of the hemp industry can grow to be even bigger than the CBD (cannabidiol) segment.

Eric McKee, owner of Wnder LLC in Colorado, is one of the founders of USHBA. He believes that while building with hemp is still a niche segment of the construction industry, it represents “a perfect storm” of opportunities through which the ravages of climate change can be pushed back and millions of people can directly benefit from the industry.

To make those opportunities a reality, USHBA intends to be involved in a lot of education and advocacy work in order to open the eyes of the public to this construction material. The association also plans to play a leading role in standardizing building materials made from hemp.

McKee points out that the hemp building sector faces a lack of facilities where building materials can be processed from hemp. Additionally, the supply of hemp plants (in the ground) is still inadequate.

Consequently, the building materials that are made from hemp are still pricy when compared to the traditional building materials, and this could lock out some people who would have wanted to select these materials for their construction projects. McKee believes that once these two challenges are addressed, hemp building materials will become more cost-effective and sustainable.

The summit in October will provide a platform for the industry players to put their heads together in a bid to chart a way forward in addressing the challenges observed. Among the speakers who will address the gathering is Steve Allin. He wrote Building with Hemp and also founded the International Hemp Building Association. Christopher Magwood, who wrote The Essential Guide to Hempcrete Construction, will also speak at the event. The USHBA says it will keep unveiling more speakers as they confirm their attendance in the coming days.

Pundits believe that hemp industry participants like Green Hygienics Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: GRYN) and Hemptown USA are applauding the efforts invested by USHBA to bring together the people who see the potential of hemp as a construction material.
