Hemp is quite an interesting crop, and more than that, it has extremely versatile applications. Outlawed for decades, it was finally freed from prohibition by the 2018 Farm Bill. The legislation classified cannabis with less than 0.3% THC content as legal industrial hemp, giving farmers in all states and tribes the leeway to farm it under state and tribal guidelines.
THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound that’s responsible for marijuana’s infamous ‘high’, and it’s present in minuscule quantities in legal hemp.
Hemp is also famous for producing a range of cannabinoids (including THC), over 100 to be exact. The most renowned is cannabidiol (CBD), and it’s said to be a potent and versatile natural medicine, working against everything from anxiety and high blood pressure to chronic pain.
That, however, is for another day. Today hemp takes center stage. The crop is insanely versatile, with a wide range of applications. First off, the plant itself takes quite a short time to mature, and once it does, there’s almost nothing you can’t do with it.
The plant can be used to make everything from fabrics and bioplastics to a building material called hempcrete (a cured mixture of hemp wood pulp, lime, and water) to highly nutritional snacks.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show is a great chance to see plenty of varied and innovative ways hemp can be used. This year’s show features a variety of interesting hemp exhibits ranging from a house-made from hempcrete, stylish clothing made from hemp and surprisingly, a BMW that’s 14% hemp. That’s right, a BMW i3 that’s part hemp.
“Everything in front of the door panels to the soundproofing around the speakers, and the upholstery uses hemp. It’s also used as baffling in the batteries because hemp is a conductor,” says Erica Stark, the executive director of the National Hemp Association.
Senator Bob Casey was also present, and he says that the experience showed him that he has a lot to learn about hemp and its applications.
“Sometimes when you’re in Washington, you can read about it, your staff can brief you, you can learn about it but it tends to be a little distant and theoretical. Here, you can see building products, parts of an automobile, the applications that I’m just beginning to learn about are almost infinite,” he says.
He says that this was the most significant exposure he’d had to hemp products, adding that there’s a lot more work to do on the industry from the federal level.
Such comments coming from the people who pass laws affecting the hemp industry are heartwarming to sector players like HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF) and Hemptown USA who believe that when lawmakers are informed, the policies that they pass will be beneficial to the affected sectors.
